Cinema Role was born out of a podcast idea that was very different from where we landed, though that tends to be how we do things when we get together. Fish randomly asked, “You know what would be fun?” and as we talked about it, we realized that we could maybe pull it off. So we came up with the name, found an idea that resonated with both of us, and worked hard to figure out a plan for a podcast that would be fun, different, and maybe just a little silly. Kind of like us! We hope you enjoy it too!
Why “Cinema Role”?
The initial idea involved guessing movie plots based on character names. As we talked, we discussed the roles movies have had in our lives and how we could expand that original idea into a full blown podcast. We tossed some names around and “Cinema Role” just hit right. The play on “cinnamon roll” made us laugh and, as we evolved our idea, the dice came into play and it all just fell into place for us.
Hi! We’re you’re hosts, Fish and Squid.
We’ve been friends since the late 1990s. We met in high school and when we discovered our joint love for Chupa Chups suckers, Jelly Roll pens, and Empire Records, it was pretty much an instant friendship. Having almost identical class schedules that year cemented it. Over the decades, we’ve both moved around the country, celebrated major life events together, danced at concerts and weddings, and conversed in movie quotes and GIFs through it all.
And what’s with “Fish” and “Squid”? They’re nicknames that happened way back, shortly after we became friends. At this point, the origins are a little fuzzy. But regardless, they’ve stuck after all these years, so… why not? They’re also way cooler monikers than our real names, which are kinda generic.
